Background of the Study
Vitamin D plays a critical role in bone development, immune function, and overall growth in children. It facilitates calcium absorption, essential for strong bones and teeth. However, vitamin D deficiency remains a global concern, particularly in regions with limited sun exposure, poor dietary intake, and socio-economic challenges. In Nigeria, vitamin D deficiency is often overlooked despite its link to rickets, weakened immunity, and poor growth outcomes.
Yobe State, located in northern Nigeria, experiences extreme weather conditions, which may limit children's exposure to sunlight, a primary source of vitamin D. Additionally, dietary patterns in the region may not provide adequate vitamin D intake, increasing the risk of deficiency. Malnutrition and food insecurity further exacerbate this issue. Understanding the prevalence and impact of vitamin D deficiency in children in Yobe State is crucial to developing intervention strategies for improved child health.
Statement of the Problem
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to severe health complications, including weakened bones, stunted growth, and increased susceptibility to infections. In Yobe State, where malnutrition is prevalent, the extent of vitamin D deficiency among children remains unclear. Factors such as poor dietary intake, cultural practices that limit sun exposure, and lack of awareness contribute to the problem. Despite the health implications, there is limited research on vitamin D deficiency among children in Yobe State. This study seeks to assess the prevalence, causes, and effects of vitamin D deficiency among children in the state.
Objectives of the Study
To determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among children in Yobe State.
To examine the factors contributing to vitamin D deficiency in children.
To evaluate the health effects of vitamin D deficiency and propose intervention strategies.
Research Questions
What is the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among children in Yobe State?
What factors contribute to vitamin D deficiency in children?
What are the health implications of vitamin D deficiency, and how can it be addressed?
Research Hypotheses
Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent among children in Yobe State.
Poor dietary intake and limited sun exposure contribute to vitamin D deficiency.
Vitamin D supplementation and improved nutrition can reduce deficiency rates.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on children in Yobe State, assessing their vitamin D levels and related health outcomes. Limitations include reliance on self-reported dietary habits and potential variations in socioeconomic factors.
Definitions of Terms
